I vividly remember the first time I experienced a teen who was self-harming.
Fifteen years ago, a young lady who was living with us at the Heartlight boarding school came to the dining room table, her face cut up and bleeding. She looked ashamed and embarrassed. Her appearance caught me completely off guard as I wondered, “What in the world is this?”
It soon became evident she had done it to herself. I felt clueless. I had even watched her purchase some disposable razors at the store earlier that afternoon. I had no idea she was planning to use them for anything other than shaving her legs. Now she stood before me, her face a mess.
I didn’t know whether to confront her, give her sympathy, let her have it, or ignore it.
How anyone could choose to cut herself was beyond me. I thought teens focused on self-preservation and pain-free lives.
Where did that go wrong with this girl?
